Joppy’s Rants: The growing Controversy on Fansubs…

Note- This next post is an opinionated piece. This opinion is more than likely not shared by Ikimashou.net, so don’t hold it against him, mmmmkay?

This time, I am writing about a piece of news that has surfacedon ANN recently: That Japan has asked the US Gov’t to help in killing all fansubs.

As much as this is hard news to take, it is their product we all are downloading. And yes, technically, it is illegal to do so. Anybody that is here in the US could get nailed if the US gov’t starts to do that….

However, I believe it won’t happen quite the way Japan wants it to happen. Because of internet growing the way it has, it is impossible(And very costly) to root out all fansub groups. And even if they did, all the fansub groups have to do is find a offshore server, and they are all set.

Now, what can we, as fans do to help this problem?

I am seeing more and more people  who just download series, and not buying a thing. They believe that since anime is there, they can dl at will and never buy a DVD. That is how the anime industry is gonna die. Because more and more people are not buying any official anime purchases, we get the news that Geneon died(One of many reasons). You guys may think I’m an elitist, but I really want to see the Anime industry survive. Note: This message was mainly toward the people who haven’t bought a thing. No Anime, no Manga, just online dls. For those who bought Anime items and dl’ed fansubs, I am not really blaming you guys for this problem.

Also, what needs to be gotten rid of are bootlegs. They are zapping away any profits Anime companies get…..plus, they use fansubs that are supposed to be “Free”, and burn them off and sell them. They are also part of the problem   that ravages our community. These should be targeted as well.

One more item: Whatever happened to the list of unwritten fansubber rules that are supposed to be followed? Back in the old days, they were followed, but now, it seems that a lot of fansubs continue on even after they were licensed. I can see long series like Bleach getting this treatment(Hopefully, they took off all episodes that are already on DVD), but it seems more and more series are being subbed way after licensing. We should, as a community, get back to that standard, otherwise, it may come all crashing down on us.

Comments are welcome. I mean, this is a conversation that  needs to be talked about, for the sake of our hobby.

You have a point those bootleggers need to go.
Man, I wish someone would license anime in our country people always getaway with it in here…

  • The unethical thing also bugs me, although I have to admit, I wasn’t going to stop watching Death Note just because they licensed it right before it ended. I would also like to see the anime industry thrive, but I think they need to evaluate their business operations. We, the fans, can buy more, but as technology makes things quicker to acquire, the industry should try to keep up.

First of all there will always be bootleggers, with or without online, so hoping they disappear is pretty much asking for the human race to be extinct.

Second, what makes you think those people will buy the DVD’s if they can’t download? They’ll most likely ignore anime and run into another hobby. Industry still suffers and dies. I’m not saying piracy is a problem but right now I’d say its the least of the industries worries.

I admit, there are other things that the industry can do, however…

Why can’t they do whatever they want with their own product?

It isn’t really ours to do with as we please.

And why can’t we at least try to get those bootlegs under control? I mean, If they are making money off of the original, AND the fansub, isn’t that bad?

in my country even if we do have original dvd, nothing can stop the dvd’s piracy and nothing can stop people from buying pirated dvd’s. you kill one, they will eventually grows again or someone else will takes the role. and if they really wanted to stop people from all over the world from pirating (sorry, i mean sub-ing) anime, they should give another options first, not just cut it like that, it’ll kill the fans and their earnings… the easiest one i can think of is,
    1) if they make a dvd of a new anime series, make it with english subtitle, english dub, no censorship, etc2…
    2) make the dvd available all over the world, in reasonable price.

but still i cant think a way to stop people from downloading or pirating since its a profitable market… but yea, if this really does happen, then i can concentrate on my other hobby, sports :)

  • If companies ignore the consumer base, there won’t be a consumer base.
